Lightbox in TYPO3 – Glossary

TYPO3 Lightbox

TYPO3 Lightbox is a tool for displaying images and other media in a pop-up window on your site. It makes it easy for users to view images without leaving the page they’re on.

A lightbox displays images or videos in an overlay above the page, usually enlarged and with a darkened background. Visitors view media at full size without leaving the page and close the view again with a click. In TYPO3 this behaviour can be activated for images and galleries.

Editors activate the option “enlarge on click” on the content element. The frontend then loads a larger version of the image and displays it in the lightbox. Depending on the template, navigation between images, captions and full screen are possible.

For performance: load the large version only on demand and deliver modern formats in suitable sizes. This keeps the page fast while the lightbox still offers high-quality display. Optimised images save bandwidth, especially on mobile devices.

Accessibility is an important point. The lightbox must be operable by keyboard, focus belongs in the dialog when opening and back to the trigger when closing, and Esc should close it. Alternative texts describe images for screen readers. A badly built lightbox can lock users out.

SEO also benefits from good implementation: images should have meaningful file names, alternative texts and captions. The original images must remain reachable for crawlers.

Check whether a lightbox is really necessary. With small images or text pages it can be unnecessary and disturbs the reading flow.

Test the display on smartphones, since gestures and screen size place different demands.

Avoid scripts that load large libraries if lightweight solutions are enough.

We implement lightboxes in TYPO3 accessibly and performantly.

This way your images convince without compromise.

In short: TYPO3 Lightbox Simply Present Images Better.
