Docker in TYPO3 – Glossary

TYPO3 Docker

Docker makes it super easy to run TYPO3 on your computer without messing with complex installations. Just use a Docker container, and you can have TYPO3 up and running in no time. Perfect for testing and development.

Docker packages TYPO3 together with PHP, the web server and the database into containers. As a result, every installation runs in exactly the same environment – on a developer’s laptop, on the test server or in production. The classic “it works on my machine” problem is largely gone.

In everyday work, teams usually rely on ddev or their own docker-compose file. A single command starts the project, and new colleagues can start working within minutes without installing PHP versions or databases by hand. Version changes can be tested safely too: you try an upgrade to TYPO3 v14 in a fresh container first, without putting the running project at risk.

It is important to keep images lean, manage credentials through environment variables and apply updates regularly. For live operation, backups and monitoring of the containers are also worthwhile. We use Docker every day in development and upgrade projects and are happy to help you build a suitable environment for your team.

For everyday use a short guide in the project is recommended that describes how to start, stop and reset the environment. Keep images up to date, check the logs after updates and plan regular clean-up of unused containers and volumes so that storage space on the development machine does not quietly disappear.

Docker also makes teamwork easier. New developers start the project with a few commands and immediately work in the same environment as their colleagues. This shortens onboarding and prevents differences between machines that would otherwise lead to hard-to-find errors.
