Navigation in TYPO3 – Glossary
TYPO3 Navigation
TYPO3 is a powerful CMS, and one of its main features is its flexible navigation system. With TYPO3, you can easily create and manage menus for your website so that visitors can easily find what they are looking for.
In TYPO3, navigation menus are automatically generated based on the structure of your pages. You can arrange your pages in a tree-like structure and TYPO3 will create the menu accordingly. You can also customize these menus to include dropdowns, breadcrumbs or even mega menus, depending on your requirements.
Whether you have a small website or a large one with many sections, TYPO3's navigation tools make it easy to guide your visitors to the right content. It's all about creating a smooth and user-friendly experience!
Navigation guides visitors through a website and decisively determines user experience and findability. In TYPO3 it is usually generated automatically from the page tree. Every page marked as visible can appear in the menu, and changes to the structure take effect immediately on the navigation.
Typical forms are main menu, submenu, footer menu, breadcrumbs, language menu and sitemap. Via page properties editors control whether a page appears in the menu, which navigation title is displayed and how it is sorted. With Fluid and TypoScript the output can be designed almost at will.
A good navigation is clear, short and consistent. Use understandable terms instead of internal jargon, limit the number of main items and keep the structure the same across all pages. Visitors should know at any time where they are and how to get back.
Accessibility is also central. Menus must be operable by keyboard, focus must remain visible and landmark regions help screen reader users with orientation. A link to skip the navigation saves time. Dropdown menus need suitable ARIA information and should also work on touch devices.
For SEO the navigation is a strong signal. It distributes internal linking, shows search engines the importance of pages and makes crawling easier. Avoid menus that are generated only by script and are hard for crawlers to reach.
On smartphones menus need large tap areas and a clear presentation. Test the behaviour on different devices.
Evaluate which menu items are used and adjust order and labels.
After structural changes, check redirects and breadcrumbs.
We design navigations in TYPO3 that guide visitors and convince search engines.
This way everyone quickly finds what they are looking for.
In short: TYPO3 Navigation: Easy menu management.
