Middleware in TYPO3 – Glossary

TYPO3 Middleware

TYPO3 Middleware is like a filter for your website. When someone visits your site, the middleware checks and processes the request before it reaches your content. It can do things like check for security, handle user logins, or manage how data is shown.

Think of it as a gatekeeper that makes sure everything runs smoothly and safely. It helps keep your website fast, secure, and user-friendly. In TYPO3, middleware can be customized to fit the specific needs of your site.

Middleware are building blocks that a request to a website passes through before the response is created. In TYPO3 they form a chain in which each stage can check, change or answer the request. The concept follows the PSR-15 standard and replaces many earlier mechanisms.

An example: one middleware determines the suitable page and language from the URL, another checks login data, a third sets security headers. At the end stands the response that goes back to the browser. Each stage does exactly one task and thus stays clear.

Developers can register their own middleware to extend behaviour specifically. Typical use cases are redirects, access protection, logging, adjusting headers or providing custom interfaces. The order is set in the configuration and determines when which logic runs.

The advantage lies in clarity and testability. Each middleware can be tested and replaced individually. Compared with hooks the flow is more transparent, and the interface is standardised. This makes updates and teamwork easier.

Pay attention to performance: middleware runs on every request. Costly operations should be used sparingly or cached. Order and dependencies should be documented.

Test new middleware with different requests, including error cases.

Keep security in view: check inputs and output no sensitive data.

After TYPO3 updates, check whether order and interfaces remain unchanged.

We develop middleware for TYPO3 projects according to current standards.

This keeps adjustments clean and maintainable.

In short: TYPO3 Middleware for Security and Efficiency.
