Headless CMS in TYPO3 – Glossary
TYPO3 Headless CMS
TYPO3 Headless CMS is a flexible content management system. Unlike traditional CMSs that manage both the content and the appearance of a website, a headless CMS like TYPO3 allows you to manage the content independently of the design. This means that with TYPO3, you can create and organize your content and then present it on any platform or device-such as websites, apps or digital display boards-without being tied to a specific layout or design. This approach gives you more freedom and control over how and where your content appears.
A headless CMS separates the management of content from its presentation. Editors maintain texts, images and pages in the backend, while a separate frontend retrieves the data via an interface. TYPO3 supports this approach with extensions and interfaces such as JSON or GraphQL.
The advantage lies in freedom of technology. The frontend can be implemented with React, Vue, Next.js or as a native app, and the same content appears on website, app, display or voice assistant. For companies with several channels this means less duplicate maintenance.
Headless also brings effort. Preview, routing, search engine optimisation and accessibility must be solved in the frontend itself. Server-side rendering or static generation helps keep content visible to search engines and load quickly.
Not every project needs a headless approach. For classic websites of manageable scope, an integrated frontend is often simpler and cheaper. Decide based on channels, team competence and maintenance effort.
Hybrid approaches are also possible: the website stays classic in TYPO3 while individual areas, such as an app or a portal, obtain content via API.
Ensure clear interface contracts, versioning and documentation so that changes in the backend do not unexpectedly affect the frontend.
Also plan security: access protection for non-public data and limiting queries.
We advise you on whether headless fits your goals and use TYPO3 as a content source for modern frontends.
This way your content reaches all channels.
