Accessibility in TYPO3 – Glossary
Web Accessibility with TYPO3
TYPO3 accessibility helps make web content accessible to all people, including people with disabilities. It follows web accessibility standards and guidelines to ensure that all users can easily use websites. This means that TYPO3 Accessibility ensures that websites are easy for everyone to navigate, read and interact with. By using TYPO3, you are helping to create a TYPO3 website that everyone can enjoy, regardless of ability.
Accessibility means that websites are usable for all people, regardless of impairments of seeing, hearing, motor skills or perception. In TYPO3 projects this affects design, templates, content and editorial work alike. It is not only a quality feature but increasingly a legal obligation.
The basis is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, WCAG for short. They describe that content must be perceivable, operable, understandable and robust. In Germany BITV for public bodies and the Accessibility Strengthening Act for many products and services on the internet add to the requirements.
TYPO3 offers good prerequisites. The backend itself is designed to be accessible, templates with Fluid allow clean, semantic HTML, and editors can maintain alternative texts, headings and link texts. It is decisive that design and development are planned accessibly from the start.
Typical measures are sufficient contrast, scalable fonts, a logical heading structure, labelled form fields, keyboard operability, visible focus and alternative texts for images. Videos need captions, audio needs transcripts, and animations should be stoppable.
Editors bear great responsibility. They choose link texts, structure texts, describe images and use headings correctly. Training and an editorial guide help to secure quality permanently. Documents such as PDF files should also be built accessibly.
Check your website regularly with automatic tools and manual tests, for example with screen reader and keyboard. Automatic checks only find part of the problems, so an audit by specialists makes sense.
Publish an accessibility statement and offer a contact for feedback.
Fix problems by priority, beginning with hurdles that block core functions.
Accessibility improves at the same time usability, readability and often SEO.
