Jumpurl in TYPO3 – Glossary

TYPO3 jumpurl

It's a feature that helps you create links that send visitors to specific parts of your website. For example, you can use jumpurl to guide someone straight to a particular page or even to a specific spot on a page.

This is useful for making sure your visitors find exactly what they're looking for without getting lost. It’s like having a shortcut to the exact place you want to show them!

JumpURL was a function in TYPO3 that routed links to files or external addresses via an intermediate URL. This allowed clicks to be counted and access to be controlled before visitors were forwarded to the target. It served, for example, to record downloads.

In newer versions the original procedure was revised for security reasons and removed from the core. Instead, signed parameters or extensions that fulfil similar tasks are used. Those who maintain older projects still encounter JumpURL in existing links and configurations.

During migrations you should check where the procedure is used. Old addresses must continue to work or lead to the new targets via 301 so that no error pages arise and incoming links keep their value. A crawl of the website shows such cases quickly.

For measuring downloads and clicks there are better solutions today. Analytics tools capture events without redirection, and tag management can be maintained centrally. This shortens loading paths and avoids duplicate addresses.

Consider data protection: if clicks are recorded, purpose and storage duration must be clarified, and consent may be necessary.

From an SEO perspective direct links are preferable because search engines recognise and evaluate them more clearly.

Document changes and test important links after the update.

Also check file accesses so that protected documents remain available only to authorised users.
