TYPO3 History

TYPO3 is a content management system (CMS) that began in 1998. It was developed by Kasper Skårhøj in Denmark. Originally designed for small websites, TYPO3 evolved into a powerful tool for large and complex sites. Over the years, it has gone through many updates, added new features and improved performance. Today, TYPO3 is used by many organizations worldwide to efficiently manage their websites

The history of TYPO3 begins in 1997, when the Dane Kasper Skårhøj developed the system for a client. Two years later he released it as open source, and a project became a worldwide community. The name derives from the idea of controlling content flexibly through typography.

In the early 2000s adoption grew rapidly, especially in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Companies, authorities and universities valued the stability, multilingualism and fine-grained permission system. Agencies, extensions and events around the system emerged.

With TYPO3 4.x an extensive ecosystem was established. Version 6 brought modernisation with Extbase and Fluid, which enabled object-oriented development and clean templates. This opened TYPO3 to developers used to current PHP standards.

Later versions improved the user interface and introduced site configurations, Composer installation and clear release planning with long-term support. Since version 9, major versions appear at fixed intervals, allowing operators to plan updates reliably.

In parallel the TYPO3 Association developed, which carries the project organisationally. Memberships, teams and initiatives finance development, security and events. The community meets at Developer Days, barcamps and regional meetups.

Today TYPO3 stands for a mature enterprise CMS with a focus on security, scalability and accessibility. New topics such as headless, AI and Content Blocks show that development continues.

Knowing the history helps to understand the philosophy behind the system: openness, collaboration and long-term stability.
