Automated Tasks in TYPO3 – Glossary
TYPO3 Automated tasks
TYPO3 makes life easier with automated tasks. It helps with the routine maintenance and management of content. This means that you can set up tasks once and let TYPO3 do them on its own. It saves time and ensures that everything runs smoothly. With TYPO3, you can focus on more important work while the system takes care of the recurring tasks. Try it out and see how much easier your workflow can be!
In TYPO3, the scheduler takes care of automated tasks. At set intervals it runs commands without anyone having to remember them: this includes clearing old logs, updating search indexes, sending newsletters, importing data or removing deleted records. What used to be done manually now runs reliably in the background and noticeably relieves the editorial team.
Technically, the scheduler is triggered by a regular call, usually through a cron job on the server. Each task can be created in the backend, given an interval or a fixed time and, if needed, planned as a one-off execution. The overview shows when a task last ran and whether errors occurred.
It is important that tasks suit the load on your server. Resource-intensive processes such as imports or indexing are best placed at night or at times with few visitors. Also check regularly whether all jobs are still needed, because old tasks otherwise keep running unnoticed and consume computing time.
Many extensions bring their own tasks, for example for Solr, forms or imports. We set up the scheduler for you, monitor execution and make sure errors are reported before visitors notice them.
Test new tasks manually in the backend first before leaving them to the schedule. That way you see how long a run takes and whether it strains resources. For important jobs, enable notification on errors so that you do not only notice weeks later that an import stopped working.
In short: Simplify with TYPO3 Automated Tasks.
