The TYPO3 Association has joined the Open Policy Alliance (OPA) initiated by the Open Source Initiative (OSI) to influence US public policy decisions. The OPA was established in response to new regulations affecting various software-related domains. While its primary focus is US policy, it aims for a global impact by collaborating with organizations worldwide.
The OPA addresses crucial issues such as cybersecurity, data privacy, and the societal impact of AI. It seeks to involve open source software foundations and other underrepresented stakeholders in public discussions to better inform policy decisions. TYPO3 is proud to be a part of this alliance alongside organizations like the Python Software Foundation, OpenStreetMap Foundation, and OpenForum Europe.
The TYPO3 Association has been an OSI Affiliate since 2014, actively supporting the OSI's mission to promote open-source software development principles and policies globally. TYPO3 Community Had a Significant Presence at DrupalCon Pittsburgh 2023
The TYPO3 community had a significant presence at DrupalCon Pittsburgh 2023, showcasing the spirit of the Meet TYPO3 initiative, which encourages cross-community collaboration. This four-day event, the largest Drupal gathering in the USA for the year, offered a diverse program, including talks, workshops, seminars, and ample opportunities for contributions. Attendees had the chance to learn from other open-source projects, understand how they manage events and communities, and appreciate their problem-solving approaches and achievements.
Despite the differences in content management approaches between Drupal and TYPO3, both communities rely on similar tools and third-party dependencies behind the scenes. Mathias Bolt Lesniak, a TYPO3 Association board member, delivered a well-received talk about the impact of open source, emphasizing commonalities between Drupal and TYPO3. The talk, along with an engaging Q&A session, extended for nearly an hour.
The event spanned four days, with the initial two days dedicated to a plethora of talks, sometimes posing a challenge due to the multiple parallel sessions. The third day was marked as a contribution day, featuring workshops tailored for first-time contributors and improved onboarding processes for newcomers. The Drupal community's recent shift to a GitLab-based workflow also eases the contribution experience for beginners.

The fourth day offered workshops, summits, and continued opportunities for contribution, including in-depth sessions on topics like advanced Drupal front-end development and industry-specific community circles. Additionally, the Drupal Association Public Board Meeting was open for attendance, showcasing differences in governance structures compared to TYPO3 Association's board.
One notable item on the board meeting's agenda was the vote on the Open Web Manifesto, emphasizing Drupal's commitment to the open web and digital public good, aligning with open-source values. This resonated with TYPO3's Vision, Mission, and Purpose, showcasing shared principles between the two projects.
The event featured an expo hall for Drupal agencies and service providers, providing insight into the latest developments and interests within the Drupal community. While official social evening events were limited, sponsors organized some, offering attendees a chance to network and explore Pittsburgh.
All talks at DrupalCon Pittsburgh were recorded and published on YouTube, providing a valuable resource for learning and cross-CMS insights. This event exemplified the Meet TYPO3 initiative's mission of fostering interactions and collaboration across open-source communities, even leading to a chance encounter with a local African TYPO3 community, strengthening connections across borders.
SkillDisplay Partners With the Doctrine Project
SkillDisplay has entered into a partnership with the Doctrine Project, known for its widely-used PHP libraries integral to many open-source applications. This collaboration aims to provide open data skill definitions for Doctrine's libraries, creating a shared foundation of competencies that will benefit developers within the community. SkillDisplay's platform, known for its organized approach to skill development, will now include expert-defined Doctrine skills in its learning tree.
For the TYPO3 community, this integration means a deeper exploration of industry standards that extend beyond TYPO3, while Doctrine enthusiasts can gain insights into its role within TYPO3. SkillDisplay's mission remains consistent, welcoming and leveraging open-source projects to enhance skills across various accessible technologies.
Doctrine, used by several major PHP frameworks and CMSs including TYPO3, Symfony, Laravel, and Drupal, being listed on SkillDisplay means its skill definitions can benefit other software projects that utilize Doctrine. This collaboration will also raise awareness of TYPO3 among a new audience.
The partnership between SkillDisplay and Doctrine is a testament to open-source collaboration, initiated during events like the Inter-Project Documentation Sprint and the TYPO3 Community Sprint in July 2023, which brought together members of TYPO3, phpDocumentor, Doctrine, and Symfony project teams.
This partnership enhances the quality of TYPO3 certification by involving experts from the Doctrine Project in defining precise learning objectives. TYPO3 becomes a pioneer in showcasing open-source collaboration at a professional certification level, emphasizing the importance of domain experts setting accurate learning goals.
Latest in TYPO3: Content Blocks Version 12 Testing and Structured Content Initiative Updates
The TYPO3 community is excited to announce the testing availability of Content Blocks in TYPO3 version 12. They invite community members to explore this extension and share their feedback. The Structured Content Initiative aims to enhance the content editing experience in TYPO3 CMS, and this update marks another step in that direction.
A new GitHub repository has been created, enabling the community to test the current version of Content Blocks in TYPO3 v12. Users are encouraged to provide feedback on existing and new features. Version 0.0.1 of Content Blocks is accessible in the TER (TYPO3 Extension Repository), and it is also available on GitHub and Packagist. For TYPO3 v12 users, the extension can be installed via Composer using the command provided.
The development team is actively working on a GUI (Graphical User Interface) for Content Blocks creation, aiming for its initial implementation as a standalone project via an independent website. They are also laying the groundwork for a backend module that will allow users to create Content Blocks using the GUI within the TYPO3 backend. This standalone backend module will be a separate extension in TER, providing flexibility and rapid development.
The team presented Content Blocks at TYPO3Camp Hamburg, sharing the concept and development status. The presentation was well-received, and the new GitHub repository was initiated during the camp, thanks to support from Helmut Hummel.
Community members are encouraged to test the extension via the repository or Packagist and share their feedback by opening issues on GitHub, joining the #cig-structuredcontent channel on Slack, or using other communication channels. To facilitate the migration from the Content Blocks Registration API to the Content Blocks Extension, UpgradeWizards will be provided.
